nicolewoodford.com Turns 5! And we are celebrating!

May 4, 2008

Greetings,

It’s been awhile since I have connected with you, and I hope that all are doing
well. I have been very busy over the past several months, and I wanted to
connect with you to give you the update on the exciting progress.
Nicolewoodford.com turns 5 years old this month, and we are having a great
celebration!

And To kick things off we have partnered with PBS.
PBS will be representing Nicole Woodford in a Nationwide Artist representation in
27 stations. Each station will auction the minimum of one, to maximum of five
paintings by Nicole.
PBS National will present a few paintings from the series “300 Days in
China”, and you can see a few works of art on the website and the works promoted on
each PBS member station. (see artist statement below)
“300 days in China”
“I am innovative artist who has returned from teaching in China, for one year.
While teaching western philosophies in art, via abstraction to eastern
traditional Chinese painting; pleasantly a spiritual exchange developed. A deeper
connotation within my work that has grown into a new body of work.
When I arrived in China in August 2005, I did not know how to read, nor speak the
Chinese language (Mandarin). And arriving from my native country the USA to
China, (where English is not the primary language). I found myself adjusting to the
challenges of communication. I wanted to trade ideas, facts, well wishes, and yet
basic requests but without an interpreter I found it was very difficult to
realize.
Because of this trial, it has prompted my vision quite a bit. A sense of
simplicity, unfussiness, and minimal effects have sustained the work. Corresponding to
the idea of “getting back to basics” learning to be in touch with others in a
different way; has become an inspired course or encounter. I began to create the
recent gestural work (with an stress on line, emphasis, harmony, restrained color
and composition), I found the ancient Calligraphy of the Tang Dynasty had
stimulating impact. Prior to arriving in China, I was creating. (never having the chance
to see this ancient text before) my work to this ancient Chinese writing style.
My latest work is about breach in communication, and how the vital exchange of
ideas is significant to all of us. Thriving communication becomes imperative to
express views and beliefs to one another. These paintings are personal, mystical
they carry with it my cultural heritage (the rhythmic movements, style, and effect
needed to create these paintings and the feelings my ancestors may have felt
during a time when literacy was illegal for my culture), my homeland, (the USA through
western influences), and the sense of isolation/frustration which occurs when
communication is broken. The paintings are inspirational to the eastern viewers
because they see that a form, (character) may be present but then it changes into
something unexpected.

I enjoyed teaching Figure Painting to the Junior class. They were such a great class, and worked very hard with the figure/models and embraced the abstract (western) concepts I presented in the classroom. We had such a great time. I enjoyed my visit to China. It will be a mememory which I will not forget.

I have arrived safely in the US. (now in Chicago) and enjoying the weather, and the city once again. I will be in Chicago for a few weeks, while organizing my next steps for moving forward.

January 29, 2006:

I am doing well, and everthing seems to be falling into place here in China. And of course as you know, Chinese New Year is today Jan. 29, 2006 and it is the year of the Fire Dog. I was so fortunate to see the preparations for the coming year, and New Year's eve fireworks were spectacular!
The city revaled colors of gold, red, and the true feeling of celebration echoed from the mountains and valleys. Everywhere you could see were fireworks of different colors which dotted the landscape. Stores and homes decorated welcoming the New Year, and people exchanged gifts, and feasts with the exchange of well wishes for Ywen Dun (New Years Day) and the coming year filled the air.

January 1, 2006:
I want to take a moment to wish all a very happy, healthy and prosperous New Year!

December 20 2005:

This month I have put up my Christmas tree, and I am goig to several Christmas parties give by my students and faculty. Classes continue through the western Holiday season (Christmas, and New Year) and then we will break for the Winter Break in January.

November 27 2005:

Time is certainly moving by very quickly. I was able to visit Feng Hung a local tourist area which has so much charm, and ancient cultural tradition. (Here is absoulutely georgeous ancient archictecture with beautful Pagodas) Most of the towns architecture is created in these wonderful white, grey, brown, and red it sets a special tone when you enter the town's enviornment and enhances it's charm) I enjoyed looking at the richness of the culture and purchasing great souviners!

I want to take a moment to mention how the Senior students (level 4) in my Painting and Mixed media class were such a pleasure to encounter. So many students embraced western ideas and abstract concepts. (We looked at Guston, Klimpt, Picasso, Van Gogh, Monet, Manet, Dubuffet, Lawrence, and Bearden) And others stayed with the traditional eastern philosophy with their painting style. The Seniors were fantasitic! I just want to say:

" Shair-Shair!" ;)

I also was honored to judge an English speaking contest for the elementary school children (who of course are learning to speak English) this was a priceless experience. The children wonderful, and the contest was amazing. I was able to get a few photos of the contest winners, and i will always have fond memories of this experience.

October 31, 2005: I attended a Holloween Party given by the students in the English department at the University. This was a trat to listen to the stories, and songs which were sung in the Haunted House. ( I have a few pictures which I will share with you. I was facinated by the face painting and the decorations in the building.)

October 4, 2005:

I have arrived in China, and I am enjoying teaching the students; and working along side the faculty. I thank everyone for their support and encouragement during my transition. What a wonderful experience!

August 16, 2005:

I have been invited to China to teach painitng in the Hunan Provence in Huaihua, China. For those of you who do not know many things about Hunan Provience; here is a little one of it's cities. Chengsha, China.

The University has offered a full time position teaching painting.

I will be living in China for the 2005-2006 academic year, (from August 25, 2005- July 30, 2006) but checking my website daily, email, telephone messages, and I have a service which will forward any and all information (mail correspondence) you send to me; in China.

The university has offically issued a "Foreign Expert Certificate", and a "Special Invitation" from the Hunan Provience as an invited artist/professor to the region. I am truly excited to be apart of the faculty for Huiahua University.
